5. SBI Air India Signature Card

SBI Air India Signature Card

USP:
This card is by far the best premium credit card in India to save money on flight tickets. No other credit card offers the rewards to spends ratio as high as the SBI Air India Signature credit card. Also, the mileage you can earn on this card is one of the highest amongst all travel credit cards.

Not a lot of people prefer flying Air India but there are still a lot of routes in India where only Air India operates regular flights. So if you’re a frequent domestic flyer, then this card is the perfect pick for you.

Joining Fee: Rs 4,999 (Renewal fee also Rs. 4,999)

Joining Bonus: A whopping 20,000 reward points on joining and 5,000 points on renewal!

  • Complimentary Airport Lounge Access.

Redemption Ratio: 1 point = 1 Air India Mile.

You can convert all your reward points into Air India miles and redeem them for free tickets.

CONCLUSION:

There is no other credit card that offers the kind of savings that SBI’s Air India Signature Card offer. Even if you consider every mile to be equal to just 0.50/- still this card offers almost 15% direct saving on all your personal flight bookings. That is a LOT of saving!!

Not only that, but it is also one of the very few cards to offer such a heavy joining bonus (almost 4X that of the joining fees).

The saving potential is massive, especially if you’re a heavy spender.

Let’s say you spend 20L on this card in a year. Then you’d have earned 2,00,000 (120000 bonus points and 80,000 regular points ) frequent flyer miles.

CONCLUSION (LMFL’s Top Picks)

I know this article was a bit too long with too much information in one go. So in case you’re still unsure about which card to go for you could use my help:

For mid-range income groups, CITIBANK Premier Miles Card takes it hands down. It lets you earn 4 miles on every 100/- spent on ANY spends. Moreover, you can use these miles straight away as cash for booking hotels and flights on the bank’s site.

Another one I’d recommend all you readers to get is the AMERICAN EXPRESS MEMBERSHIP REWARDS card. In a year, just by using your card 4 times a month you’d have accumulated enough points to give you a statement credit worth Rs. 7,500/- which is a huge saving. Moreover, it also offers 5% cashback (upto Rs. 750/- a quarter) on utility payments straight to card from time to time.

In case, you wish to do your own research, here is a previously published article that’d help you pick the right credit card for yourself:

Hope you found this post helpful 🙂 Let us know in the comments section if we’ve missed out on any or if you need any help picking the perfect credit card for yourself!

  1. Pingback: How To Choose The Best Credit Card For You - 6 Things To Consider

  2. I can see the hard work and time spent on this by you on this article. Good one. Most of these are fees based and for frequent flyers. This is like a small trap. They give JP points, and take fees. JP points have a v low conversion ratio… I think about 20 paise… pathetic 🙁 Please also write an article about cards with no fee and rewards for general public. Most important point to mention is that, a person will be able reap most of these benefits only if he or she pays off the full balance every month, by the due date. Otherwise, the penalties and interest charges far far out weigh the benefits for the poor guy. Hope you take this positively.

    1. Thank you so much, Tej. Appreciate it.

You’re right about the miles-based cards. But in recent times, that has changed slightly. Nowadays, many cards offer flexible reward points instead of miles which can be used straight-away as money! The CITIBANK Premier Miles card is a good example of that. You even get 10,000 Premier Miles (worth 4,500/-) on paying joining fees of 3,000/-.

In fact, in most cases, you get the benefits for paying the joining fees almost immediately and they’re usually more than what you pay as joining fees.

However, you’re completely right if we consider the traditional JP miles cards. These are only good for redemption on last minute tickets so you get good value of the JP miles. Which is also why I haven’t included them in my list.

LMFL Quick Saving Tip: If made use of well, your JetPrivilege membership can get you at least 3-4 free flights (without using any CC). There is a separate post on that too which you should read.

Regarding the interests and fees, I can’t argue or say much about that as ‘credit cards’ as a financial product are made that way. I’d rather suggest instilling some discipline in your spending habits. What I’ve done is, I’ve kept my credit cards separate for ‘fixed monthly expenses/necessities’ such as bills, electricity, groceries, etc. and for my personal ‘leisure’ expenses such as outings, movies, etc. And I’ve put a low credit limit on the second card. This way I’m able to keep my extra expenses in check and avoid interest/late payment fees etc.

I’d be more than happy to write an article on credit cards with zero fees, but if you ask me they don’t actually end up saving you any money and you’re still at risk of over-spending. So in such a scenario, I’d rather stick to a debit card.

Thanks again for the feedback 🙂 Hope to see you around!

Lots of thrifty love, LMFL 🙂
